Aluminum does rust. However, when the aluminum oxidizes, it oxidizes clear unlike most other metals, therefore you can't see the rust. And the oxidized aluminum protects the aluminum underneath from rusting/oxidizing further.
It's one of the neat little details about aluminum. It does rust. You can't see the rust. The rust doesn't spread beyond the surface atoms of the aluminum.
I can now say that i've put my material sciences knowledge to some work. Guess my high priced education isn't completely wasted.
